Ok guys, we have a real treat with this one. Karen Brittain over at HIMB has been kind enough to invite us over to her labs at Coconut Island (HIMB) at noon on Sunday, September 12th. She said she will show us around her facilities and let us check out her work on opakapaka breeding and, in her words, "I'm thinking we'll do some basic live feeds work, checking and counting algae, rotifers, copepods. Also looking at fish eggs if the paka spawn." So for everyone who missed the last trip to Coconut Island, this is your chance to redeem yourselves! Just like last time, seating will be very limited (probably 12 ppl max) so its on a first come, first serve basis. Also, only paid members of HMAC will be allowed to attend and the fee per person should be $5 each as a donation to get onto HIMB.

FYI Karen Brittain is a very famous aquaculture researcher and currently owns her own clownfish breeding business (whose critters are usually sold at CFH and others, from what I understand). She is also a former researcher at the Waikiki Aquarium and is the only person in the world to successfully spawn and rear Hawaii's own Masked Angel (Genicanthus personatus). The video put out recently (http://reefbuilders.com/2010/02/09/genicanthus-personatus-spawning-rearing-video-karen-britain-bruce-carlson/) of the Masked Angels juvis are the ones she raised. She is also in charge of the opakapaka breeding program over at HIMB and has done a lot very cool work over the years in the aquaculture field.

Also, I set up an email address at HonoluluMAC@gmail.com. This will be our official email address, so all those people who have paid their dues, please shoot me an email at that address and I will put you on 'the list' so I can make announcements like this here on RH and via email. Thanks!!

Steve

I wouldn't mind going, if there are seats available, though I don't mind letting anyone else go if they haven't been there before.

This outing would be cool to go. Gotta miss it though... hopefully those who couldn't make the trek last month can go to this one.

Can we pay club dues on that day, if we go?

This will be a different trip from last time, so if you went last time, don't worry about going this time. In fact, this will be a more technical trip with lots of aquaculture stuff and microscopy, not so much with the touring of the island. Young children might want to stay at home for this one, unless they are interested in this type of thing. I know when I was a kid I would have LOVED to go to this type of thing, but friends probably would have hated it!

Next time!

Not a problem. As long as you can pay that day, you're in.

My biology prof wants to come. She'll bring her club fees that day, so three total for me. Thanks!

Nice find TC. I will email them shortly.

Here are the people who are signed up (besides me):
Wayne Akimoto +1
Not Sponsored (+1?)
Tooms Teacher
Kimberly (+1?)
I want to keep this outing to a max of 10 people (Karen actually requested only 8!) and priority will be for paying/payed members. Does anyone else want to go? I think if we pulled off a few of the non paying guests, we can squeeze in 1 or 2 more. Let me know.

Also, does anyone know why I'm not receiving email notifications from RH about anything?

Remember for everyone to be at the Coconut Island dock at about 1145 so as not to miss the boat that only runs to the island at the top of every hour.

Here some pics from the past meeting. Karen Brittain was really great! She showed us around her lab, let us see microalgae, copepods and opakapaka babies that were about a week old under the microscope. She also took us out to the adult pens and grabbed a net, scooped it across the surface and came up with a small handful of opakapaka eggs, which I promptly ate! lol I might be the only person in the world that has eaten opakapaka caviar! Ya, the tiger shark in the pond (which is formed naturally and allows fresh ocean water to move in and out) was pretty cool. There were actually 2 in the pond and they were both babies. Very cool!

Well, you can't spearfish there (protected), and I wouldn't want to swim with a large tigershark in the water. They said they saw a 12 footer in the harbor when you first enter. Scary stuff.

I think he meant K-bay in general. Not the protected area around Coconut island.

Yep! Although with the number of really big fish swimming around the island, maybe.......
