I know it's a bit far off... But since the next meeting is going abroad I figured we could do some initial cordination. Like whose going, what to bring and where to meet... Any ideas???

I would like for the next meeting to be a field trip to Kaneohe Bay to collect some sand anemones and possibly some sexy shrimp. We will meet on the second Saturday of of June at a location that is easily found by everyone (like the windward mall?). Hopefully we can get a guide who can take us out to where the critters are because I don't know that area well at all. Any volunteers to lead the group?

I'm pretty sure you'd need a boat to collect the sand nems. I don't think they're close enough for the swim. Could be wrong, but that's what I heard.
As far as the sexys, haven't seen or heard of any, so don't know where to get them.

Just show up at the designated time and place (TBA). A yearly membership will run you $20

From what I understand, the sexys are usually found with the sand nems. As for needing a boat to get to the nems, that could be a problem. There are none near shore?

Well I've taken a boat out on several occasions & snorkeled a lot of the reefs and sand bar specifically looking for sand anemones and I've never seen one! Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but I've looked all over!!

Ya, bummer you're leaving. You'll have to keep posting pics of all the cool stuff you can have legally in California!

This is looking less plausible with each message. We might have to do another place for a field trip. I'll talk to some people and keep you guys updated. Maybe a 'dry' field trip where we don't get in the water. That might actually be a little safer option anyway.

I'd say that is a safe recommendation. It's almost fish breeding season, so next month could be a wet get-together.

Well, since it looks like we won't be able to collect sand anems without a boat, I'm working on getting us a behind the scenes look at either Waikiki Aquarium or HIMB (aka Coconut Island). I't will be for the 2nd Saturday of June. If you or anyone else have any other idea for a field trip, let me know and I'll try and make it happen. I think that if the WA and HIMB fall through for some reason, my third option would be to do a zoa tidepool walk/snorkel. I will keep everyone updated!

I have an email out to Dave Krupp asking what I need to do to set up a tour of the island. So I'm waiting to hear back from that.
I also got an email back from Reef Check Hawaii asking if we would like to conduct a survey or help with a survey in the future. If we want to do one of our own she will help us out to set one up or if there is not enough people and some are interested she can give me the information on the next survey and we can participate in that if we would like.

I've been talking to Mark Heckman (Education Director) at HIMB and he just wrote back to me saying that he can take us this Saturday from 1-3PM and is full for the rest of June. I think I will have to turn him down because its just too short of a notice to get everyone together, not to mention we have members that cannot go this Saturday. Bummer. I'll try to set up something at HIMB for the August meeting.
As for the Reef Check thing, I would definitely be interested in doing this. Keep us updated!

So it looks like Waikiki Aquarium is good to go, though its not set in stone. Each person will have to pay admission, plus a little bit (not sure how much extra) and we will get to go behind the scenes. Also, everyone will have to pay their dues for the year, which is $20. I haven't collected anything yet because I wanted to see is this club would take off and it is has/is. I will keep you all updated as this progresses. I'm also trying get HIMB (Coconut Island) booked for August. The July outing will be at Petco because they are having their 1 year anniversary and the fish manager was kind enough to invite us out to set up a booth to promote for both HMAC and RH. We will discuss more about this at the next meeting and here on RH as the time gets closer.

Ok guys, here is the scoop. The Waikiki Aquarium (WA) behind the scenes meeting cannot take place this Saturday due to some issues with the aquarium. However, they will be available next Saturday so I booked it. I apologize for the movement of the meeting dates, but there there's not much I can do. Soooo, the WA is booked for us and it will be $16 per person. Also, everyone attending MUST pay their dues ($20 each) otherwise they will not be permitted to join the group. I need a confirmation from everyone who will be attending so I can let the WA a number for the size of the group.

I would be interested. I think tagging along with the professionals would be best the first time, so I vote to participate with one of their sessions.

Hey guys, I need to know who is coming this weekend to the behind the scenes tour at the Waikiki Aquarium. I also need to know who is in your family. Spleen, I have been trying to get a hold of the folks at WA about your question and will get back to you on it because we keep missing each other. The time also needs to be nailed down (grrrr), but it will be in the early afternoon.

I was actually surprised by how not crusty the back was. There certainly were some gnarly spots, but overall it was really presentable. The new NWHI exhibit should be really cool.

It was a very cool tour. Too bad more of us couldn't have been there (though honestly with some of the small spaces that they had us go into, not sure how much space there would have been if there were a lot more of us). Well worth going if the club sets up another behind the scenes tour. Thanks to Steve for setting this one up!

No problem! Maybe I'll try for another meeting like that at the Aquarium next year. I do have a behind the scenes tour on tap for HIMB aka Coconut Island in August too though.

I got to go to Coconut Island on a class field trip but my guide was not very knowledgeable and was very anti-aquarium hobby.
He also said is was really hard for non-researchers to get access to the island, which was hilarious because a few minutes later, a bunch of college kids in bathing suits ran by.
