View Full Version : Second Meeting
Isurus79
04-08-2010, 03:02 PM
Our next meeting will be the first Saturday of May which is the 1st. I know I mentioned at the meeting that I will be out of town, but my trip (which is business!) to the Big Island has changed to later in the month, so the original plan of us meeting on the first Saturday is still in effect. If for some reason, my trip changes again (which it won't, I already bought the tix), tough luck for me. The meeting will stay on the first Saturday of May. I apologize for the mixup.
As for the meeting, I like the idea of everyone bringing any extra equipment they have and doing a swap and/or silent auction. Also, I contacted Jeff (hawaiiantank) about talking to folks over at Reef Check about coming and giving us a talk. Jeff works with the President of the organization, so I figured he would be our best bet to make it happen! We'll keep you guys updated with the Reef Check situation.
The location of the meeting will be the same:
3239 Ualena St (bottom level)
Honolulu, HI
96819
Time: 4PM
See you all then or maybe I will see you guys at the Waikiki Aquarium around 11AM for their 'release the fish' day where people get in for free! Check it: http://www.waquarium.org/_library/images/earth%20month%20mauka%20to%20makai%20expo[2].jpg

Shoot, that sucks man. Is your schedule the same every month? I mean do you always work on the first Saturday? If so, maybe we can change the date to the second Saturday of every month. One of the great things about having a small group!

Nah it changes every 4 weeks or so... Shift work for the loss! Saturday I happen to be working 12-12... I'm actually off the second weekend I think but you don't have to shift the date just for that... So no worries

wow, over 2,000 posts! that's alot of time infront of the computer!
We'll try to be there, sorry about skipping the first meeting, I totally spaced! Stupid thing was, we were sitting @ home (which is not normal for us on a Sat) and I kept saying I know there was something we were supposed to do today. sorry!
Hey Steve, is there an age requirement? (in other words, do i need to get a sitter?)
and as far as doing an equip swap, i was totally going to suggest that! See you guys there!

Well I just got an email back from Krista. She said that she has another training going on that day. I also asked if she might be able to make the 8th instead if that would be better for her schedule. If the second date doesn't work she said she would give me the ppt presentation and I could do most of the presentation instead.

Its a club meeting for reef nerds like me. I think this upcoming meeting (Sat May 1st) we will have Jeff (HawaiianTank) talk to us about the local reefs. We'll also be doing an equipment swap/sale as well. Next month, I'm working on having one of the guys who is in charge of breeding flame angels at OI come and speak to us. I'd like to do a field trip the month after that and go collect some sand anemones and sexy shrimp. I don't foresee any age restrictions at the meetings, however yearly dues are $20. See you then!

I've seen something that looks an awful lot like peps, but didn't grab any when I saw them. :banghead:
http://www.marinelifephotography.com/marine/arthropods/shrimps/shrimps.htm If you scroll down to the shrimp just past the skunk cleaner shrimp, Keoki Stender has a critter he calls Lysmata sp. that looks a heck of a lot like the peps.
FYI, I saw these critters out on the reef in front of Ala Moana. You gotta flip rocks to find 'em. Jump off the wall at Kewalos and swim out in front of Ala Moana, but make sure you go at high tide otherwise you'll get stranded like a beached whale!

Hrm, lysmata contains a few species, I think the skunk cleaner, blood red and some others. Wurdemanni are the peppermints that eat aiptasia, but I believe there are other shrimps in the same genus called peppermints that some dealers sell as aiptasia eaters when they're really not.

that's not fair! i wanted to go on the field trip! can we do the next meeting a week early? :{

how will the swap/sale work? will the seller get a percentage, or will all the proceeds got to the club? debating bringing the chiller down.

Kev PM'd me last night with the same question. He will be bringing some zoas to sell and mentioned that he would like to donate half the proceeds of livestock to HMAC from Aloha Corals. I think since we do not have any "set in stone" system for sales that sellers can donate to HMAC on a voluntary basis. We will set up rules for sales collections at the meeting this Saturday, but will not enforce them until the next sale.

You could probably use one from the people who will be bringing their extras to swap. Unfortunately Richard does not have any really good lights. We could grab one from the tanks in the back if worse comes to worse. Let me ask Jen if I can grab one of her extra lights.
Edit: I'll bring my crappy LO T5/T12 setup that I don't use anymore. The lights should work, but it might be a little ghetto looking.
Wait how long is this?

Well I just got the power point a little bit ago and am about to go through it and figure out what I am supposed to say. It will be about Reef Check and what they do. I will have to talk to Gretta who is in charge of the coral disease center and find out what is going on there later. Maybe even see if I can get her or someone from there to do a presentation.

I think we can arrange that. If I recall correctly, no one had any problems with meeting on the second week. This will, however, have to be set in stone for the future, so if anyone else has any problems with meeting on the second Saturday of the month, speak now or forever hold your peace!

As in time change? The time (4PM) was set in stone because everyone agreed that that was the best time, while no one had any preference for which Saturday of the month they wanted to meet. That is why we can change it. However, from now on we will meet on the second Saturday of the month at 4PM. That does not mean that we can't have other side meetings where the whole group or part of the group gets together and goes octocoral hunting (for example) on a different day.
