Ok, lets see if I can figure out this poll.
I actually changed the F.I.S.H. acronym a bit. I think it should be "Marine F.I.S.H." which stands for "Marine Fish and Invertebrate Society of Hawaii." I actually really like this name and will be voting for it myself. And yes, by announcing which one I am voting for, I might be tainting the pool, but I really think "Marine FISH" is sexy, to the point and is the best name for our fledgling society. :cornut: Just my 2 cents.
FYI, the original FISH acronym was for "Fish, Invertebrate and Softies of Honolulu." This option will be on the poll as well.
Poll closes 7 days after today (April 5, 2010).

There should be a poll at the top of this thread.

Many years ago, there used to be a club called Saltwater Aquarium Society of Hawaii (SWASH).
My 2c:
One good thing about having an organized club is that when the state or the snorkeling lobby tries to put restrictions on aquarium keeping, you can stand together as a group and make your voice heard. In these instances, having an official sounding name can go a long way. I like "Honolulu Marine Aquarium Club".
Nice to see this taking shape.

Hey, thats a good point. I never thought of this group as being a future political force or lobbying group.

Yeah that thought had already crossed my mind. Might even be worth putting together a reef clean-up effort somewhere like Kbay....oh yeah, by the way. Snorkel Bob operates a snorkeling tour there in Kbay also. It couldn't be just some fly by night effort though, we'd have to get some experts to show us what to do & how to do it so that it's somewhat official, but yes you are right about the name.

Might be able to set up something with coconut island and do the seaweed cleenup with the super sucker? Not sure on the rules or if thats a possibility with them... something for the future maybe.

I like the idea of doing a reef clean up and/or help with the algae cleanup in K-Bay. I've always wondered what kind of critters are getting pulled up with the algae too.

small fish, hermits, crabs, eels, shrimp and other lil random critters. The high school i went to we would have a camp at the end of each school year out at kualoa (china man hat). But it would be all the way in the back. its where the school keeps its 40ft sailing canoe in the old elephant tent. My senior year we walk down to the end of the beach towards the mountains. back in there is nothing but that groilla ogo. we just had this like lil 6-8ft lay net (not the mono net) with weights on the bottom floaters on the top. it would take two to three people (depending on how big you wanted to make your scoop) and scoop up a bunch of it by hand and thorw it in a lil 13boston whaler. we filled up like four 13fters, one 14ft livingston, and a BUT LOAD OF BAGS of the stuff in a 16-18ft livingston.
We would switch off scooping with the net but after awhile i would just start pickin up arm full of the ogo and throwing it into the boat. i thought it was a lil funny picking up an arm full and having a crab stareing at sitting on all the ogo lol
O and throught that day i felt like 3 mabye 4 eels slither between my legs. I was wearing tobbys tho. No way in hell id do that bare foot. just need board shorts and tobbys and your good haha

Hey, thats a good point. I never thought of this group as being a future political force or lobbying group.
Well, politics suck, trust me! It's no fun at all. The real reason for a club should be to share & promote the hobby among friends. But, just the fact that an organization exists can show the powers that be that it's something important that people care about.
I've found that, when dealing with this sort of thing, the aquarium industry is usually portrayed as some kind of greedy enterprise that only exists to make money. Which of course is not true - aquariums are a way for ordinary people to enjoy the ocean and in the long run it benefits the public a great deal.
Might be able to set up something with coconut island and do the seaweed cleenup with the super sucker? Not sure on the rules or if thats a possibility with them... something for the future maybe.
Working on the full scale super sucker is not easy - you have to be authorized as a research diver by UH which is quite a complicated process (I used to work for the UH diving program). But, IIRC they have a "mini sucker" version which is more portable and might be a possibility. I know several of the people involved and if you guys want to look into this I can ask around.

Yeah, didn't mean to get us too far ahead. We still don't even have a name. Concur with the politics aspect, but your second paragraph is exactly the reason why I think it's important to be seen helping the ocean environment. So that we can do something to help improve the aquarium industry's reputation (especially since the recent yellow tang massacre). We'll have more traction when Snorkel Bob tries to introduce some new ridiculous legislation.
Your contacts will probably prove to be beneficial when/if we're ready to pull the trigger on this. Thanks for the info. HawaiianTank has some contacts in this area as well, I believe.

MASH
Marine Aquarium Society of Hawaii.
Needs to have "Hawaii" not only "Honolulu".
"Hawaii" meaning the state. Meetings could have people from other islands too.
"Marine Aquarium Society" is what it should be.
Sorry, didn't want to cause trouble nor go against the titles, but I think we need to go simple and direct.
Just my thoughts.
Now, if the goal is to give some boost for other islands to have their own Aquarium Society... then the "Honolulu" is the way to go.

I have no graphic skills but I'd suggest making the logo more stylized and be recognizable even when it's printed black and white. IME, the most powerful logos are ones that you can recognize even when it's simply printed in white on a colored background or black on white. Maybe the outline of flame angel or a humu or a tinker's?

B&W is always cheaper. I was in a band and we always did out shirts in b&w since we were poor musicians.
